Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials is Microsoft's in house solution to antivirus software, announced in November 2008 and launched nine months later in September of 2009. It protects your computer from spyware, rootkits, viruses, and trojans and it's free for home and small business users.

Microsoft Security Essentials 2019 borrows it’s scanning engine and virus definitions from other anti-virus Microsoft products and it provides real-time protection against malware. It does this by scanning files upon being created or saved on your hard drive and disabling any threats it detects but it’s also constantly monitoring a variety of activities on your computer. However, Microsoft Security Essentials still lacks the personal firewall features found in other antivirus software.

Microsoft Security Essentials is compatible only with older versions of Windows as Microsoft eventually replaced it with Windows Defender; it currently runs on Windows Vista and Windows 7 and certain versions will run on Windows XP but support was dropped after version 4.5.
